Solutions and its types

SOLUTIONS


A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.

Homogeneous mixtures are those mixtures which have uniform composition and properties throughout the mixture. For example: A mixture sugar in water, a mixture of salt in water.

Depending on the number of the components present in the solution, solution may be called as binary solution (two components), ternary solution (three components), quaternary solutionn (four components) etc. 

Generally the components of binary solutions are termed as solute and solvent.

In general, the component which is present in large quantity is known as solvent and the component which is present in lesser quantity is termed as solute.

or you can also say that the substance which  is going to be dissolved is solute and the substance in which dissolution takes place is solvent.

The physical state of a solution is determined by the physical state of the solvent. On this basis the types of solutions are as follows:
