How does the alcohol based hand sanitizer work?
Why does the concentration of alcohol ranges from 60-90%? Why not 100%? Have you wonder why our most of hand sanitizers have 70% alcohol?
In this article your thirst will be quenched.
Why COVID-19 Virus is named as CORONA Virus?
This virus contain spike-like projections of glycoproteins on their structure, which appears like a Crown under the electron microscope, hence they are referred to as CORONA Virus.
Why does Alcohol used as an antiseptic?
Alcohol exhibits rapid broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against Vegetative bacteria, Viruses and Fungi.
Commonly used alcohols are Ethanol, Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and Propanol.
It is also one of the WHO's list of essential medicines.
When was first Alcohol used as an antiseptic?
Alcohol has been used as antiseptic as early as 1363, with evidence to supports its use becoming available in the late 1800s.
How does the alcohol based hand sanitizer work?
Alcohol has disinfecting or antiseptic property by denaturing the protein and lipid membrane of micro-organisms with subsequent interference with the metabolism and cell lysis.
Alcohol denatured the proteins by coagulation, just like your blood coagulate on a cut.
Now you can understand how if all your blood coagulate (hardened), you wouldn't survive. Alcohol has the same effect on germ cells and the germ cells die too.
Why does the concentration of alcohol ranges from 60-90%? Why not 100%? Have you wonder why our most of hand sanitizers have 70% alcohol?
The Isopropyl alcohol concentration ranges from 60-90% with 10-40% purified water. The concentration less than 50% is useless whereas higher concentration does not generate desirable bactericidal, virucidal or fungicidal properties.
70 % solution of isopropyl alcohol exhibits better disinfecting property because, the amount of water in the solution is also playing a vital role in killing microorganisms by decreasing evaporation and increasing surface contact time for more effectiveness. 70 % solution completely penetrates the cell wall which permeates the complete cell and coagulate all protein which causes death to the microorganism. While in case of 91-100 % solution, as the solution enters in the cell of microorganism, protein coagulates instantly and create a protecting covering for further protein coagulation.
In composition Glycerol may also use to increase the time of drying, Hydrogen peroxide for as oxidant and some fragrances.
Steps when using an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
1. Apply hand sanitizer to the palm of one hand.2. Rub hand together.
3. Rub the hand sanitizer over all surfaces of hands and fingers until hands dry.
Care must be taken.
1. Do not go near flame or gas burner or any burning object during application of hand sanitizer.
2. Let hand sanitizer dry by itself, do not wipe off hand.
3. Never ingest the sanitizer.
